Meet Georgie

Georgina Holder: A Nurse Manager

What is your current role?

A Nurse Manager of a 30-bed ward within the Public Health sector.

How has this been affected by Covid 19?

Covid 19 is like nothing we have seen before and therefore the Public Health sector has been proactive in preparing for what we hope never happens. This has involved extensive education and advanced training for all nursing staff, to ensure our readiness for Covid 19 patients. Watching what our colleagues in Europe and the USA are enduring does take its toll, with many of us no longer watching the daily news. The one positive is a new sense of solidarity amongst my colleagues & the international nursing fraternity, with many of us joining Facebook groups to encourage & support one another. I have never seen such a global unity of my profession.

How many kids do you have and how old are they?

I am a mum to 3 teens - Harry aged 13, Lucy aged 15 and Tom aged 18. My 18 year old is undertaking year 12, a stressful year historically without the added complication of Covid 19.

I am also mum to 3 beautiful German Shepherd Rescue pooches.

How has Covid 19 impacted your work and home life right now?

It has certainly had its ups and downs. I recently had to be tested for Covid 19 which meant that I had to self-isolate from my family within our own home. I had to wear a mask whenever in a communal area, eat and sleep alone, with no physical contact with anyone. It was heartbreaking and very lonely; an incredibly frightening time for us all. I was one of the lucky ones who tested negative.

How has Covid 19 influenced how you feel about motherhood?

This piece sums up my sentiments exactly:

As my kids get older I want to be the house

their friends feel comfortable walking into.

I want to be the house that has the

biggest snacks and biggest laughs.

I want my kids to want to be here.

I want their friends who need extra

love to come here for that love.

I want their friends who have nowhere

else to go to know they are always welcome.

I want them all to know they will be given advice

and opinions but they will never be judged. I want

my kids to know they can be themselves here. I will

give them their space but I will always keep them safe.

I will love anyone who walks through the door for

however long and however hard they need that love.

Maybe for a day, maybe forever.

I want to have a house full of love, a

house full of acceptance, a house where

they can leave any burden behind and just be a kid.

I want to be that house.

How will you be celebrating Mother's Day this year?

I’m rostered off... yaay!

Hoping to have a day where we can sit by the fire; kids, hubby and pooches, play games, watch movies and just enjoy being together. I may even stay in my pj’s all day... what a treat!
