Sustainability
Supply Chain
Over the last 9 years we have developed transparent and open relationships with our suppliers and skilful artisan teams. Through all of our relationships with our suppliers, we have worked towards aligning them with our values with the aim of ensuring a responsible business, social and working environmental practice. MURKANI Jewellery is created in a family-owned studio outside Bangkok, in Thailand by a small artisan team with good working conditions.
To avoid over supply, our production is done in small batches to ensure we only meet our market’s needs.
Materials
We use real materials to ensure our jewellery is long wearing. MURKANI is committed to using good quality materials that wear well in the hope that our pieces don’t end up in landfill. In saying this, we are always striving to further improve our materials to be more ethical and sustainable.
Community & Giving Back
Giving back is a really important aspect of MURKANI. It makes what we do all the more meaningful and worthwhile.
Since 2019, MURKANI has been working closely with HAGAR Australia in supporting their Economic Empowerment Program for Cambodian women who were victims of trafficking, abuse or modern slavery to live free and more rewarding lives. In 2022, we also launched the Lost and found collection in partnership with HAGAR to raise funds to support the Afghanistan Livelihoods project.
We are very proud to have donated over $55,000 to Hagar. Thank you to our community for helping us achieve this and helping women in these communities improve their day to day lives.
In 2022, we launched our CONNECTED Collection in collaboration with Daisy Hill. $5 from each necklace sold from the CONNECTED Collection will be donated to the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF) to help increase the number of scholarship opportunities at their Partner Schools. AIEF defines success as First Nations students’ completion of Year 12 and a successful transition to future tertiary studies or employment. We are thrilled we will be able to help support this amazing program.
Diversity
We acknowledge that we are linked to the world that we share, and therefore constantly play an active role in shaping our future. We strongly care about our behaviours and are continuously committed to running an inclusive and empowering culture. We believe in celebrating our differences, and embracing, respecting, and honouring everyone.
Packaging
Our packaging is carefully selected and generally made from either recyclable, compostable or reusable materials. Our jewellery pouches are designed to be reused and all orders are sent home in compostable courier satchels and labels from HEAPSGOOD with the aim of our packaging being free of plastic, rescuable or reusable as much as we can.
To minimize the use of any soft plastics that are required in the industry in the import and export of products, we reuse these soft plastics throughout our supply chain. We are working on solutions with our suppliers to utilise different materials for our plastic bags longer term.
We acknowledge that there are always more ways to minimise our impact on the environment and are always looking for new ways to improve.
Less Impact On The Earth
At MURKANI, we are always trying to tread lightly on the earth by minimising landfill. We are constantly striving for new ways to minimise our impact on the environment. We will continue to produce using small batch production to reduce landfill. We always encourage conscious consumption and support the longevity of our pieces by offering a repair service to extend their life. We still have more work to do in this area and welcome ideas from our customers.
To prevent MURKANI Jewellery pieces ending up in landfill we have developed different styling tips like using our Extension chain to mix and match older and newer necklaces to create different lengths and looks. We try to communicate this regularly on our social media and website. We want you to wear your MURKANI pieces forever. If you ever have any ideas on this, please let us know at marketing@murkani.com.au.
