My name is Kiralee McNamara and I am the owner and designer of Murkani Jewellery.
I started my business in 2013 with a dream to create a business and life that I loved. I also had another dream which I am very proud to finally announce is now coming to fruition. I wanted to support women who are in less fortunate situations than myself and give them the opportunity to live a life of freedom with control over their own destinies. In 2019 I started working with HAGAR AUSTRALIA supporting their Economic Empowerment Program for Cambodian women who were victims of trafficking, abuse or modern slavery to live free and more rewarding lives.
WHAT IS HAGAR AUSTRALIA?
HAGAR is an international not-for-profit organisation that works to transform the lives of women and children who have been trafficked, enslaved or abused and to bring an end to these crimes. Their vision is to see communities free and healed from the trauma of human trafficking, slavery and abuse.
On March 8th 2019, International Women’s Day, we launched our first collection of necklaces called the FREEDOM COLLECTION. Following on from this, we have now launched matching earrings and the Healing Hands symbol.
$10 from every necklace purchased and $5 for every pair of earrings sold will go to supporting HAGAR’s vocational training programs in Cambodia.
HOW YOUR PURCHASE MAKES A DIFFERENCE?
HAGAR provides individually tailored support to each survivor:
- Ensuring they have a safe place to live
- Providing professional trauma counselling
- The opportunity to complete school and gain vocational skills or a university degree
- Support their need to reintegrate into the community and lead a positive and productive life
The inspiration for the range came from the approach that HAGAR takes with each client and its desire to see them safe, free and thriving. The range features 4 necklace and earring designs:
The Hamsa hand symbolises protection.
The Lotus symbolise thriving, given the right conditions to grow.
The Vintage Swallow symbolises freedom, both to make your own choices and financially.
The hands and heart symbolise healing.

SUPPORTING AFGHANISTAN WITH HAGAR
You would have seen in recent days the unfolding situation in Afghanistan. The United Nations currently estimates that approximately 550,780 people across the country are displaced and without shelter, food and water. Hagar believes in doing “whatever it takes, for as long as it takes”, and as a result they have had a long history successfully working to improve the lives of the some of the most vulnerable in Afghanistan. Hagar are currently working in Afghanistan to assess the current situation thoroughly and develop a response plan so they can help those who are displaced and especially vulnerable. Working with other NGOs when possible, the Hagar Afghanistan team will be focusing on providing 4 key relief activities to provide practical and essential help to those currently in desperate situations.
Due to the extraordinary nature of this unexpected situation in Afghanistan, Hagar has none of these activities budgeted for this year and so, they are calling for our support. Donations will help make sure these activities can be implemented and will be directed where most needed when it is received. To donate, visit their website: https://hagar.org.au/donate/
